Our last day.
9.3.16
Red sky at night didn’t mean sunshine the next morning. It was raining hard!!
We had asked the shuttle service to pick us up at 3.20pm but had asked if we could change our minds & decided to have a late breakfast and rebooked for 11.20am.
It was sad it wasn’t Joe that picked us up but we picked up a German man en route so I had someone else to chat to. He’s a keen diver and travelling alone as his wife didn’t fancy the not knowing where you’re going next.
Some of the other parts of Borneo he had seen sounded lovely and I’m going to do more research when we get home.
Have fallen for this country and want to see more, but in the dry season!
Checked back into Hotel Margherita, on a different floor, the room is the opposite way around which seemed weird. Doesn’t take much to confuse me.
The rain stopped 🙂 So we popped to the laundry as we’re off to Antalya Turkeyfor 4 nights before going home to Fethiye. He said an hour, we said we might be longer.
Went for a final Sarawak laksa noodle soup, going to miss that very much, and of course coffee ice by the river. A local guy sat and chatted to us, wanted to know the ins and outs of everything but in a nice way.
It reminded me of when tourists were a novelty years ago in Turkey, random people would take time to sit and chat, and all the time we would be suspicious of their motives and be waiting to get conned!
We went back to laundry after a couple of hours, he was asleep, so not ready!
So off for another stroll around the mall, went back, still not ready!
Went for a wander around ‘new’ Chinatown. It was so close to our hotel but we hadn’t wandered that way, still finding new bits after all this time.
Loved this fascinating area, and we found a little restaurant for later, Planet Sambal.
I went back to the hotel, John went to collect the laundry and the guy was asleep again, but it was 99% dry!
We packed and got sorted for the dreaded long journey tomorrow.
Went to Planet Sambal as planned.
I had mee kolo, absolutely lovely, noodles in soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil and chilli with coriander and beef.
Going to have a go at making it if I can find sesame oil back in Turkey.
John wasn’t so lucky as they had run out of Cola, and poppadoms but the rest of his chicken curry was good.
Whilst it was nice you really can’t beat the basic places for locals for flavour and atmosphere.
Our taxi is booked for 5am. Wake up call booked for 4.30am, so early to bed.
Its the first time I’ve stayed somewhere that you ask the Concierge about airport taxis, they book it and you get a letter confirming the time and registration number of the car.
In the room is a form to nominate your favourite hotel staff.
We nominated all the concierge team, they’re so lovely and always pass the time of day and have a laugh.
Actually, all the staff are great.
Watched a bit of tv and fell asleep, feeling sad and have said goodbye to all the different bits of this funny city, John commented that I only do that when I really like somewhere.
