Will we finally make it to Bako?
6.3.25
The last thing John said last night was ‘you set your alarm I can’t do mine’ before crashing out in a beer related coma.
My charger played up so my alarm didn’t go off as phone flat.
I woke at 8am and woke John and said we will have to be 9am bus instead of 8.
The guide books say that if you don’t go early you won’t see proboscis monkeys.
John was still being sick but insisted he would be ok.
We saw the No 1 Rapid Kuching bus but before we could get on a man in a minibus offered us a lift for 5rm. Slightly more than the bus but quicker.
En route we saw the German lady we saw at Kubah Park that got a leech on her tummy. She was waiting for the bus and minibus stopped, she was hesitant but we assured her its fine and quicker.
So she joined us
The man told us he lives in Bako village and drives to Kuching every day looking for passengers.
We arrived and got our tickets. 20 RM each and 40 each for the boat.
The boat arrived, we all had life jackets for the beautiful 30 minute crossing.

John doesn’t like boats much so didn’t really help his queasy tummy.
When we arrived we got our trail msps from HQ and selected an easy 45 minute each way trail to where they said we would see proboscis monkeys.
On the way we saw long tailed macaques playing, so cute.

The trail was so much easier than Kubah, much of it was wooden platforms, so simple I felt a bit cheated, it brought us out to a deserted beach, stunning , no proboscis monkeys but we did see a nice hermit crab!

We could have taken another trail but John really was struggling while we sat by the beach, so we headed back to HQ.

On the way we chatted to some tourists and asked if they had seen any monkeys. They said there were some near HQ.
Yayyy !! There were some and bearded pigs too.

Magical, the funniest looking monkeys!
Loved the pigs too

Drinking iced coffee while watching wild bearded pigs was a surreal and wonderful moment to treasure. They’re very funny and have the cutest faces.
We saw some more proboscis monkeys playing in the trees, had a wander, watched for a while and sat on the main beach.
Real blue sky and sunshine with a gorgeous breeze, just perfect and so glad we waited for good weather, totally worth waiting for.

We arranged our boat back for 3pm, it was incredible how much water had come in. On the way there were huge sand islands where they were digging for clams, we couldn’t moor up but instead removed footwear and walked.
A bit unnerving after seeing a warning poster!

On the way back we left from a jetty, all so pretty

In the big open sea, the South China Sea, were some big waves, it became a bit like a Thorpe Park Wet n Wild ride, but loved it, not sure John agrees, he looked relieved to see the village.

We had 30 minutes to wait for the bus so had a wander along the main road of the village, there seemed to be a market going on, loads of seafood.

The bus took 45 minutes (3.5 RM each)
Fabulous, so glad we went.
Got back and been sorting our cases and overnight bags.
Tomorrow we’re off to Permai Rain Forest for 2 nights stay in a tree house, then back to Grand Margherita who are storing our bags.
So excited.
Currently waiting for our laundry. Our usual service guy shuts at 6 so we’ve been to a real life launderette.
Have had noodles and ginger chicken and chicken curry just opposite while waiting for the dryer. Was delicious.
Johns obviously going for kill or cure with the curry.
He still looks a bit hungover, bless him.
We looked a right pair of idiots trying to work out how to use the laundry machines, especially when John put the wet stuff in the top machine and I put the money in the slot for the bottom dryer.
It was lovely to see all the family on Face time, all at my sisters celebrating birthdays and Mother’s day, miss them all so much and can’t wait to see Lauren in a few days.
